I didn’t mention this in my day 1 post, but last week I ended up spraining a muscle in my lower back. This, of course, has been pretty debilitating to walking and you know, living…it’s amazing (and I know this is going to sound stupid) how much your spine can hinder your movement. It started to feel so much better last Monday, so I figured, “Cool, I’m going to go workout”…yeah…I’m an idiot. Hey, don’t judge. Welcome to the adventures of me, constantly pushing myself too hard and never letting myself fully heal.
My doctor told me that I shouldn’t do any weight training for a few weeks, but he wants me to keep walking and do light work cardio. And Day 1 was tons of walking…and it was too much. I woke up hardly able to move this morning 😦 It was so depressing, the pain was really unbearable. I ended up ubering to many places (Uber is remarkably cheaper here). I started my day off at Boudin Bakery. I’d show a picture of my food…but…I ate it before I took the picture. It was super delicious though! I did take some pictures of the cute animal sourdoughs they made.
So what makes Boudin so special? They make their sourdough from the Mother yeast from 1849! Isn’t that incredible? Trust me, if I lived here, I’d be coming to Boudin for my breads. Once you have a mouthful of this you’ll think, “Why the hell did I ever eat any other bread?” I will say this has made me want to try a hand at making my own bread…so who knows, maybe a recipe for bread will show up at some point. I definitely want to post some recipes on things that I’ve made in the past couple of weeks.
As for my ability to get around, it was quite awful. The plan was to walk down from Pier 1 to Pier 39 (Fisherman’s Wharf), but I was in so much pain it would have taken me hours to get there. To top it all off, it was raining so that sort of cut our day short. We ended up walking around Pier 39 for a bit and went into a few fun stores:
- Candy Baron
- Trish’s Mini Donuts
- Bliss (I bought a super cute bracelet there)
- Houdini’s Magic Shop
- Lefty’s Left Handed Store
By the time we had finished walking around and getting what we wanted it was starting to come down pretty hard so we returned to our Airbnb so I could lay down and rest my back.
We had reservations for a restaurant, Burritt Room. We ordered the following:
- TATER TOT POUTINE Short Rib Gravy, Swiss Cheese, Cheddar Cheese, Onion
- 3 FARMSTEAD CHEESES Sourdough, Quince Jam, Spiced Candied Nuts
- FRIED BRUSSELS SPROUTS Fried brussels sprouts in bacon fat, Almonds
- WILD NORDIC HALIBUT pickled Tokyo radish, pureed green onion, caramelized onion, dill, sunchoke
- SEASONAL SORBET TRIO Strawberry, Pomegranate, Mango
Do yourself a favor…go there! I don’t know if every night is live jazz music, but I’m happy to report the day that I was there they had one and they were very good.
Following this, Secret Improv Society which is right across the street from Burritt Room. This was a fantastic show, the cast was so fun! By the end of this I was pretty exhausted so back to the Airbnb with me…tomorrow is another fun day!
